What you receive

Getting your birth certificate from Vietnam

Copies are issued in Vietnam. Here is what to know if you are in Australia.

What Home Affairs and the Passport Office ask forHome Affairs asks for the original document together with an English translation; in Australia the translator should be NAATI accredited. For citizenship, it asks for a full birth certificate showing your date and place of birth, birth name, sex, the dates of issue and registration, and your parents' names. The Australian Passport Office asks for documents not in English to be translated in full.
i
Which documentThe certificate or a certified extractIf you no longer have the original Giấy khai sinh, a copy is issued as a bản sao Giấy khai sinh or as an extract from the civil status register (trích lục khai sinh). Either is translated in full, including every note.
i
From AustraliaRequest a copy onlineCopies can be requested on Vietnam's National Public Service Portal with a VNeID login. Since 1 July 2025, civil registration is handled by commune-level People's Committees. The Vietnamese Embassy in Canberra can only issue an extract for a birth it registered itself.
i
ApostilleNot mentioned by Home AffairsHome Affairs' evidence guidance asks for the original and an English translation and does not mention legalisation. If another authority asks for one, Vietnam has issued apostilles since 11 September 2026.

What to send us

Frequently asked questions

My birth certificate is old and handwritten. Can you translate it?

Yes. Send the clearest scan you have. If any part cannot be read, we will tell you before translation starts.

Can I use a household registration book instead?

Home Affairs lists a family or household registration document among the alternative evidence of birth. Vietnam's household registration books (sổ hộ khẩu) stopped being valid on 1 January 2023, but an old book can still be translated as a historical record.

How long does the translation take?

Standard delivery for a birth certificate is 2 to 4 business days. You can choose 1–2 business days, or urgent within 24 hours, at checkout.

Do I need an apostille on my Vietnamese birth certificate?

Home Affairs' evidence guidance asks for the original document and an English translation and does not mention legalisation or an apostille. Vietnam joined the Apostille Convention with effect from 11 September 2026, so if another authority asks for one, it is issued by Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
